4540 SECRET STEADMAN Sft.{Mr Swift} Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} Rev. Sft{Mr Swift}/LWK. E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey}2/HP.12.12.35. 20/25 Chassis Cost (Reductions.) Radiator. With reference to Sft{Mr Swift}/WNW.1/EJ.5.12.35, we agree that the suggestions for cost reduction in connection with the radiator side plates and top tank are very valuable and we should strive to achieve the saving of 9/10d, which is involved. The alterations involved however are so far reaching that before they can be adopted on production it will be necessary for them to be tested and cleared by the usual standardisation sheet. If possible we should attempt to get these modifications incorporated in a radiator to be fitted to the car which will shortly commence a 10,000 miles test. We should be glad if BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} will instruct this. --- oOo --- Referring to Sft{Mr Swift}/WNW.1/DF.10.12.35, we think the suggestion of producing the shutters from flattened Staybrite tube is very good and should result in obtaining shutters of a consistently more perfect appearance. We shall be interested to know the cost of this alteration when ROY.{Sir Henry Royce} has had time to investigate it, but in the meantime we would suggest incorporating a set of such shutters in the radiator for the 10,000 miles test car. With reference to suggestion (2) of the same memo, we are extremely doubtful of the wisdom of deleting the bronze bushes for the shutter pivots, in view of the fact that we already receive complaints of shutters rattling, and we feel that the aluminium bearing strips will wear rapidly and produce rattles. This point, however, can be proved by testing and we should be glad if BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} will instruct this modification also to be incorporated in the radiator on the next 10,000 miles test car. E/Lid.{A. J. Lidsey} | ||
