Report concluding that high oil consumption in the Phantom engine is due to the fit of bearings and piston rings, not a design flaw.

| contd :- -7- to 3 pts/min. at 2500 R.P.M. This engine was fitted with piston rings similar to Silver Ghost(1907 40/50 historic RAC 15,000 miles trial) - not 'L' shaped rings. Therefore in general we can say that high oil consumption on the Phantom is no mystery or peculiar to the design but depends upon the fit of the bearings and the piston rings. Attached is a curve showing the oil flow at different speeds for 12-EX which has carefully fitted but scraped bearings and is the car to be used for the next 10,000 miles test.
