RE. TESTING OF GOSHAWK EXPERIMENTAL CHASSIS. [Handwritten: X4219(crossed out) X4086]

With reference to EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}2/LG30.3.22 (to CJ.) and to your telephonic conversation this morning.

We now take it that the arrangements for carrying on these tests will be as follows:-

The second car for Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} 6-Goshawk-11 which we originally hoped to leave England for France on Wednesday or Thursday next week, should not now be sent until the faults complained of with the present car have been overcome on this car, as far as is practicable.

In the meantime the Car Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} is now running 5-Goshawk-11 should continue its Express Test and as soon as 6-Goshawk-11 is ready for sending to France, the question of whether 5-Goshawk 11 should cease its express run and return to the Works for modernizing, must again come up for alteration, [Handwritten: consideration.]

The Car which Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} now has at Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence 4-Goshawk-11 should remain there, as long as we are able to keep him 'au fait' with the troubles, complaints and experimental investigations which we have made, so that decisions and cures for these complaints can be established in the quickest possible time.

The Amateur Test Car, we have promised to deliver Wednesday or Thursday next week, subject to it being fit and safe to run for this test so that the complete car could be ready at Sales disposal Easter.

[Handwritten in margin: to B.J only]
I also attach copy of memo. I have today sent to 'C' with reference to a telephonic conversation I had with him, following your message over the 'phone this morning.

We propose to carry on with the programme as above arranged, unless we hear from you otherwise, which confirms the conversation we had on the 'phone this morning, as requested by you.

We do not wish to stop the running of these cars but be in a position that we can have a car on which to investigate and effect cures.

Much depends on the number and magnitude of faults developed as to whether it will be advisable to return 5-Goshawk-11 [Handwritten: MS EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}] to W. for modernisation when 6-Goshawk-11 gets to France - or to continue 10,000 miles Express.

P.S. Have not received yours BJ4/H31.3.22 - trust above now makes it clear. [Handwritten: EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}]
