RE. SUBFRAMES. X.5380
X.7380

As a result of our experiences with the mounting of SS.{S. Smith} and India bodies we agree to the following modifications to the subframes of both chassis.

(1) Owing to the upsweep of the frame at the rear having considerable variations we suggest the rear supporting bracket on the frame be fitted, not at a given height above the level top of the frame, but at a fixed dimension below the top of the frame at the centreline of the bracket.

SEE ORIGINAL FOR SKETCH.

This should assume that the top of the subframe is always slightly above the top of the chassis frame - see section A-A on F.79576.

(2) We agree to the clearance between the chassis frame and the main frame being increased to 1". The front ends of the subframe cannot be moved. The brackets will need lengthening.

(3) We agree to packing being provided under the front as well as the rear supports to enable the dash to be matched up with the scuttle - (we believe we have already instructed this.)

(4) We agree to a slotted hole being provided in the centre support bracket on the subframe as well as the large clearance hole in the chassis frame, thus :

SEE ORIGINAL FOR SKETCH.

We also agree to the bracket remaining as at present, and the effect of (2) being to make the packing washer .400" thick. We suggest that this packing be made up of plate washers about .050" thick, and that with each subframe an excess of these be supplied.

These remarks apply to both chassis. Would Derby please put these modifications in hand.

(5) We shall set out a coachbuilder's print of the subframe telling how to use it, profitting by our experience with the experimental bodies. We shall expect Derby to add to this print as information comes through.

(6) We do not wish to have to provide contd :-
