RE. EXIDE BATTERIES.

Referring to your memo Wd{Mr Wood/Mr Whitehead}7/NJ5.11.23, which we should have replied to previously, but was held over pending the visit of Mr. McKinnon, which we anticipated would be on the 20th. inst. but who has not yet called upon us.

Replying to the points raised by the Chloride Electrical Storage Co. in their letter dated 1st. inst. we would emphasise the fact that the batteries put forward for inspection were of the re-conditioned type. and which we are given to understand are regarded as 100% after re-conditioning.

Our chief concern in showing these batteries to Mr. McKinnon was to know the cause of the paste leaving the plates and if possible to alleviate this trouble on future batteries, and it was Mr. McKinnon's offer that we should have four new batteries in place of the 7 we returned.

We note their remarks that the loss of the negative paste was due to the cells having been used after the positive plates had entirely collapsed.

From these remarks it might appear that the negative plates were used again when being re-conditioned.

At the time of the inspection of the 7 batteries no definite period of service rendered was mentioned. We have since endeavoured to trace the service of these batteries, and we should say it averages 9 months. They were probably kept in stock three months before being used.
