RE. GOSHAWK 11 ENGINE.

Attached herewith are photographs taken of the Goshawk engine on the Test Bench. We have now completely dismantled the engine. It has run between 60 and 65 hours. All the parts are in excellent condition. There was excess carbon in the combustion chamber caused undoubtedly by the excessive amount of oil which was getting passed the pistons at light loads. The spring rings which hold the gudgeon pins in position had, in some cases, been rubbing against the cylinder walls.

Examination of the clutch trunnion showed that the fitting of this may have been the cause of the failure. We are making sure that everything is correct when it is put up the next time.

We have been running on the Test Bench a Goshawk 11 Universal Joint on the Gear Box. We have oiled this joint after every 25 hours running. We found when we dismantled it that there was very little oil in the universal joint but that the chamber with the sliding gear contained a considerable quantity of oil. The only reason we could see of the oil having escaped was that it had worked out through the faces of the joint where it is bolted on to the flange on the gear box and where the oil cover is held. There was never any obvious leak of oil from that point but we consider that
