TO EN. from R.{Sir Henry Royce} EH. copy to CS. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EFC. ORIGINAL D 5 R8/G31/10/19. RECEIVED 31 OCT 1919 x.3/29 x.3/13 x.3/14 x.2744 RE CHASSIS 1 EX. We have re-arranged the wiring on 1 EX. moving the coil closer to the distributor, and put the wires in a wooden trough. [handwritten: This could be painted dead black] As this improves the slow running, it could quite well be done on trials cars. It is also quite possible to make this alteration to chassis about to be delivered. In case it is decided to do this as we recommend, the sketch enclosed will shew you how we have arranged the wires, which really, on the car, look neater than the old battery ignition wiring using the so called "tennis rackets". It has taken us about three hours to make the change, and with the works' facilities quite a reasonable job could be quickly arranged which a man could fit to an existing car in less than two hours. In passing, I am very pleased with the appearance and the general working of the R.R. car coil, which proved itself here to be better insulated than the Remy. I have the opinion that it is not the coils fault in the least, and thanks to it being a small one, could be fitted quite close to the distributor without being an eye-sore. It would have been still more easy to fit had it been left with its original feet at the bottom of the coil. It would appear that it should be altered back to this arrangement as soon as convenient.
