'USA' 4-SPEED GEARBOX. X5310

We have carried out a further test on the 4-speed box using the original reverse shaft, but fixing two Woodruff keys into the shaft to prevent any turning movement between the pinions and the reverse shaft.

The car was run for half an hour maximum torque full power on reverse. There was no tendency for the reverse to work out. Examination of the box afterwards shewed that movement had taken place between the sleeve under the small reverse pinion and the reverse shaft. The shaft and the sleeve were badly marked.

It would appear from our experience so far, that the safest thing to do with the reverse would be to use a parallel shaft and also keys to prevent any turning on the shaft.

We are not yet entirely satisfied that we are free from trouble with the 1st. speed working out. On the last test we have made, we put the original standard selector fork back which had not been relieved. We also had the original plunger springs. When running full power on 1st. speed, the gear worked out.
