Date & Recipient: 28th. August, 1935. The Manager, Test Department, Messrs. Bentley Motors(1931)Ltd., 16, Conduit Street, LONDON. W.1. Main Body: Dear Sir, Noise and Vibration Testing. In the manufacture of automobiles each sub-assembly must conform to commercial limits of noiseless operation, and where aural methods of testing are employed test engineers are often faced with complaints from assembly departments when a rejection is made. To aid test departments the Western Electric Company have developed an entirely new design of Subjective/Objective Noise Meter that removes all doubt from the tests and gives hairline dial reading decisions. This Meter has many special points of design which suit it specially for test room work among which are the following:- Simplicity of operation - no technical knowledge is required. Consistent accuracy of readings - self calibrating. Strongly built - not a piece of delicate laboratory apparatus. Portable and worked either from mains or batteries. Backed by the foremost Electrical Service Organisation in the world. Naturally we should like to demonstrate this instrument to you, as this would be the only way to prove that the Meter is indispensable to an up-to-date test room. The Writer would be glad to call at any time suitable Handwritten Notes & Stamps: Top Left (Handwritten): Do you know anything about this? Any good for our work on chassis or Aero engines? Our trouble is not usually to find them, but to cure them. Middle Left (Handwritten): E.P. Test Dept have one of these or similar instrument and find it not of much use. RM{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} I don't think they will tell you all about it. I don't think any instrument of this kind can ever be relied on to decide whether a noise is passable or not. I believe that it is the voice of the sound waves and the amplitude, often it is the voice and the pitch of the noise not the loudness which is objectionable.
