Rolls Royce Ltd., Experimental Dept., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr.Robotham. We are much obliged by your communication of the 18th and note your remarks with regard to clearance. We regret to have to report that our progress so far with the RR.53 pistons has been unsatisfactory, inasmuch that we have found that a very different contractional allowance has to be made for this material as compared with L22, and also the behaviour of the pistons during heat treatment has not been similar. The result is that the skirt wall thickness has become dangerously low and variable, and we are, therefore, obliged to start right from the beginning again in the foundry and modify our equipment to meet these peculiarities. In view of the behaviour of this material, we also strongly incline to your view that the question of clearance should not be complicated by the association of another alloy and we think, therefore, we should supply the RR. pistons dimensionally similar to those already supplied and leave the question of clearance to form the subject of a further independent test. | ||
