they would like to take the responsibility of supplying him with new tubes and covers, if necessary, if he would run them without security bolts. He agreed to this and the result was that he has not had a single blowout since.

In view of the accumulated evidence that was brought to bear, Mr Hives and myself were bound to admit that the attitude adopted by the Dunlop and Michelin Companies was correct. Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} has since carried out experiments on his own initiative and confirmed the Dunlop results, with the result that he has issued a standardisation sheet in the usual way recommending that we delete the recommendation we are making at the moment that all beaded edge tyres should be fitted up with security bolts.

In view of the foregoing facts, when I found that we were just placing a further order for security bolts I cancelled same, as I anticipated that we should very soon be adopting the attitude of leaving the responsibility of the tyres to the tyre makers, and would, in accordance with the Dunlop and Michelin Companies recommendations, instruct that in future beaded edge tyres should not be fitted with security bolts.

I cannot give you the whole of the story which would take too long. The above is an outline of the case, which I think fully justifies the attitude I have taken at the Works, pending the signing of the standardisation sheet, that we should not buy further security bolts, since in the case of the Dunlop Company and the Michelin Company they are both prepared to take fully responsibility for their tyres remaining on the wheels more satisfactorily without security bolts than when the latter are fitted.
