Preliminary frame distortion tests conducted on a 20 HP chassis, describing the testing apparatus.

X4268 2" cams at 180° We have made some preliminary tests on frame distortion, the apparatus used being as follows :- An aluminium plate 1ft. deep by 6 ft. long has been fastened vertically along the centre line of the chassis being supported on the rear of the crankcase and on brackets attached to the 2nd. and 3rd. cross members. A spring loaded pointer fixed to a light but strong aluminium channel is clamped at any desired point below the chassis frame and the vertical and horizontal movements as scribed on the aluminium plate are noted. Any tendency on the part of the plate to vibrate sideways is allowed for by the spring loaded pointer. We conclude from the tests that the frame distorts in the following manner :- (1) The vertical movement of the pointer can only be accounted for by the frame twisting abouts its longitudinal axis. Taking a vertical displacement of the pointer of 5/16" at a length of 16¾" from the outside of the frame and assuming the frame to twist about some point in this plane we have an angular distortion of approx. ½°.
