The AVON INDIA RUBBER CO. Ltd. -3- (5) Because of their less flexible sectional shape, both Pilote and wide-base tyres will for a given sectional width and at the same load and pressure, be less comfortable than conventional tyres. It remains to be proved by test whether the oversizing necessitated by lower carrying capacities and the lower pressures recommended will restore all of this lost comfort. (6) The new American programme simplifies our experimental position, in that new rims only and not new tyre moulds will be required. We have therefore written to Seiberling requesting full details of rims and when we have this information, we shall again communicate with you. Our tests on this development will have to cover simultaneously cornering power, riding comfort and tread wear. DIMENSIONS OF 16" TYRES. We have also attached to this letter a table setting out dimensions, load carrying capacities, and weights of our 4 ply 16" tyres. For each size, two weights are shown - the present weight and the lower weight which will presently become standard. For each size weights of tube and rim band are also given and the recommended and permissible rims. TEST TYRES. As a final test on the programme of weight reduction, we are now completing, we will provide for experimental running on your test cars, eight 4 ply 7.50/16 tyres and twelve 4 ply 7.00/16 tyres in the new lighter constructions. These should be ready for despatch to you some time during the week commencing 25th. November. 1940. As these tyres will provide us with information required for our general tyre development, we shall, as arranged, charge their cost to our own experimental account and invoice you with the Purchase Tax that is payable on the tyres. Yours faithfully, THE AVON INDIA RUBBER COMPANY LIMITED. J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} C. Mackay. DEVELOPMENT MANAGER AND CHIEF CHEMIST. | ||
