To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} -3- R10/G14/9/21 Contd. American cars. You will remember that there are detachable spring fittings for the front end of the rear spring so as to permit this being taken down without disturbing the valance. These fittings should be adopted in place of the original ones which did not give this facility. Mr. Day informs us that there are springs for about 1,000 lbs. which ought to give fairly decent riding if those we tested were suitable for 1300 lbs. Regarding the exhaust system, this was to pass outside the undershield for the sake of keeping the floorboards cool, and part of it might be wrapped up in asbestos and jacketed in sheet iron to make it more silent. I have suggested that the silencer be made of concentric chambers. It may be longer than the one seen, and will probably have to have a capacity equal to half of the 40/50 H.P. before we can expect good silence without loss of H.P. The fan behind the radiator looks as though it should be made with longer blades. The liberal space allowed was for shutters between the fan and the radiator, but we are not sure whether these would be fitted. Mr. Elliott will find out where the undershield is hung up. We intended that they should be side plates supported. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
