ELECTRIC STARTER. X.3740

To avoid the necessity of making the somewhat unusual starter that we fit to our cars (because of the large dimensions of the present engine and gear box) the above box has been adopted which allows of a starter of more ordinary arrangement being geared to the flywheel. The designs for this have already been sent to Derby, and it only remains for us to complete the electrical switch which has received much attention during the past fortnight, and will be completed within the next few days.

LENGTHENING OF CHASSIS. X.3688

2 1/2" have been added to the length of the fuses [handwritten above: frame] to avoid the use of "A" steering, which appears to introduce many awkward features and spoils the dignified look of a large car. It cuts the instrument board nearly in two, preventing it being fitted at a proper angle. It involves the driver sitting in a cramped upright position with a somewhat too high and forward seat for the convenient handling of central change speed levers.

It will be remembered that the French would have nothing to do with this type of steering, and I think it will be found that the English and American chauffeurs will have greater [handwritten above: more] affection for their cars if this steering will [handwritten over: is] not embodied. The 2 1/2" suggested in the length of the frame will never be noticed except to add to the appearance of the finished car.
