W.A.Robotham, Esq., Rolls-Royce Ltd., DERBY Dear Mr.Robotham, I am very interested in the last sentence of the last paragraph of your letter, namely, that when the engine has been decarbonised the oil consumption goes up. We were constantly up against this at Daimlers even though the Pistons had not been touched except in-so-far as the carbon had been removed from the Piston heads. I found, however, that invariably the inlet valves had been very carefully cleaned so that the film of carbon was removed which inhibited the oil going down the inlet valve stem. By leaving the inlet valve alone we found that the oil consumption before and after decarbonising, was generally the same.
