For the attention of Mr. Hardy. Dear Sirs, We are in receipt of your favour of the 16th instant, reference as above, and in regard to the question of backlash on the 25/30.h.p. Roller, which you brought to our attention when your Mr. Hardy visited us last, we would explain that at the time more backlash was considered advisable. The first procedure adopted by us was to cut the Cams with wider centres than the centres which were correct for the particular gear ratio used. This produced the additional backlash noticed by your goodselves. Later the gear ratio was altered to be correct for the wider centres which has the effect of reducing the backlash to the nominal amount.
