VU555 To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from Da{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} c. to R & Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EVI/M22.6.23. RE 20 HP. CHASSIS HEAD LAMPS X.4291 X.4090 Referring to your BY11/P14623., and BY/C11/P20623, from what you say we gather that you have endeavoured to keep the lamps 32" above the ground whilst the chassis has been raised due to larger tyres. We suppose we must use up all existing wing stays, but it would be nice if for series 501 upwards we could have the lamp in a position 1" higher than at present on production. We think, however, that this matter should be held up for a few days until we have heard from Messrs. Lucas regarding the RB.{R. Bowen}60 type of lamp, which we may be able to obtain from them. Concerning dipping head lights we would like to make those on chassis 4.G.II correct. The control lever on the instrument board has been brazed up incorrectly and the lamps will not remain dipped. Mr. Hives has promised to send us a new hand lever sweated to its countershaft. We would be glad to receive this immediately. We notice that the lamp bracket base on the wingstay on 4.G.LL is at the height above the frame which we originally called for, making the lamps 33¼" above the ground, and we think in this position they look quite good, and have a slightly more dignified appearance. We send herewith No. Sch.1427 shewing the design of twist spring for returning the lamps to the horizontal, which Mr. Royce would prefer to the springs now in the exposed wiring conduits. Would you please send us one of these when you have got one made and we will fit it to the car. With these modifications the scheme for the dipping head lights will be completed, and as stated before all experimental sets should be placed at their correct position by piecing up the present standard wing stays to suit. Should the larger lamp - RB.{R. Bowen}60 - become standard, we shall adapt the scheme to suit it. With reference to N. Sch. 1417 we have shewn the lamp RB.{R. Bowen}71 fitted to the present standard wing stay for convenience in speeding up this experiment. DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} | ||
