650 MEMORANDUM Copy to Lim/Eng'g Chassis E/HY.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer}3/E.17.4.37. WRAITH III - STEERING COLUMN. It has been suggested by Mr. Hives that the outer tube of the Wraith III. steering column be built up by welding, and that this should be tried on the bury chassis. In B.Sch.8133 herewith (prints sent to RYS.) we show a proposed method of building up this tube. Apart from the fact that we are a little doubtful whether this welded construction is as strong as the brazing process one, we still wonder whether the scheme will prove any cheaper. The finish of the top and of the tube has to be very high to accommodate either plating or enamelling. The bottom end of the tube will require to be ground after welding as it is a location face for a bearing. We are asking the Cost Department to give comparative costs for the two constructions. R/W.
