X1325 To Hy.{Tom Haldenby - Plant Engineer} c. to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} c. to EJJ. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}24/KW.17.1.36. In the proposed final layout of the experimental shop and garage, in addition to the Cold Chamber there are two other pieces of test apparatus which we should like to have consideration – (1) Road Wheel Dynamometer. This was removed to make way for a Fitting section and at the time it was understood it would be fitted up elsewhere without delay. It has however never been re-installed and we are without an experimental road wheel dynamometer of any sort. We should be glad if the brake could be overhauled and a position arranged for it. (2) Silence Chamber. We have had considerable discussion about this, the original scheme being considered too elaborate, but it has now been simplified and attached is the latest suggestion. EJJ. has promised to let us have complete estimates by Wednesday next. The necessity for this silence chamber has been shown up recently by the fact that, though we can pass off synchromesh gear changes on the rig, almost every box which has been submitted to us by production for special cars has side shaft gears which cannot be considered passable, yet these same gears are inaudible on the production rig. The joggling rig is of course exceedingly useful at Shardlow, but a considerable amount of its value is lost owing to the fact that it is located so far away from experimental.
