Contd :- -2- Our tests indicate that there is less tendency to 'gum up' with large groove clearance than with small. A probable explanation is that liberal clearance allows sufficient movement of the ring to prevent building up a film of carbon. We are now making tests to shew how the gumming tendency is influenced by weak and stiff piston rings. The results should shew us if an advantage could be expected from stiffer rings.
