x4027 To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} E.3/HP.23.5.33. c.c. RHO. re Peregrine Engine. This is to confirm that we propose to rig up a Peregrine engine with the 20/25 system of grooves and holes in the crankshaft bearings, with a view to reducing the oil spray in the engine, Nos.1, 4 and 7 main bearings to have complete circular grooves and the intermediate bearings no grooves at all, but only single feed hole. All crankshaft journals to have single hole only, as now. We are suspicious that the intermediate bearings get rid of a lot of oil, particularly if grooved. The big-end bearings on the 20/25 engine have always been very good, but this is not the case with Peregrine, so we therefore feel that any benefit to be derived from this modification on Peregrine should quickly show up.
