Investigation into a knocking noise caused by spring bush clearance on Chassis No. 1560.

Re Spring Bushes.

With reference to Mr.Paterson's report No. 613, on his visit to R.P.Richards,Esq. Chassis No. 1560, of which the following is an extract:-

"Mr.Richards said that when he first got the car there was a nasty knocking, somewhere round the back, when travelling over rough roads. He sent the car back to W. where they said it was due to the way the body had been built. So the car was passed on to Cockshoots who found that the knocking was caused by too much clearance in the spring bushes. The owner then had the washers recessed so as to bear on the ends of the spring bushes but to clear the ends of the pins, and the nuts screwed up tight, thus putting drag on the ends of the springs. This completely stopped the noise. We took off the nuts and washers from the front end of two of the springs and found that we could get a .014" feeler in between the bush and the pin for a distance of about 3/8". It would most probably have entered further only it became too broad."

You ask:-

"Was this a faulty manufacture; did we fail to discover this and yet Cockshoots did?"

Our standing order number - 1516 reads as follows:-

"The clearance of spring bushes must in all cases be made at least .010" and not more than .025".
