To Rolls-Royce Ltd. Derby......... Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} Copy to......... D/BP files Levallois Sr/VA4/ET.25.I.38 Re: AC.6 ALUMINIUM TIN BIG END BEARINGS PHANTOM III CHASSIS With further reference to your Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/R.18.I.38, we hope to receive chassis 3.AZ.140 (Mr. Benhaim) in a short time, to carry out an R.20 engine clean, for which he will pay. As this car has now covered about 45.000 Kms., it will be very interesting to examine the connecting rod bearings and also the lower halves of the main bearings and note how they have stood up. When the owner sends us the car, he will leave it with us for about 7 working days. It will therefore be advisable for us to have a set of connecting rods in hand, with the bearings correctly fitted and bored to size in case we should need them. We attach our official order N° 1982 for the parts in question. We naturally leave it to you as to the type of big end bearings with which the rods should be fitted. We should mention that, should you send us the AC.6 type and we have to fit a set of new connecting rods to the engine, we cannot very well ask the owner to let us have his car after say 10.000 or 15.000 miles of running in order to examine the big end bearings, as the owner will expect his car to run for another 45.000 or 50.000 Kms., or more, before we carry out another R.20 engine clean.
