We have received complaints from the Test Department of end caps coming loose on the above, causing an elusive rattle, and find that this trouble has arisen since adopting the steel shell which is about 4/- cheaper than the aluminium one formerly used. Due to the relative difference in expansion between the steel shell and aluminium end caps, the shell appears to be permanently stretched by the stoving temperature of 170°C, and in most cases it is necessary to carefully re-swage the ends after enamelling. It is considered that this trouble could be overcome by using steel end pieces, and we are, therefore, obtaining quotations to confirm that this will involve no increase in cost. The end cap can be produced in steel without difficulty, but it will be necessary to manufacture the inner frame in two pieces as shown on the attached sketch because the present design is unsuitable for pressing.
