The difference is not so marked as one might expect. The C.A.V. dynamo has commenced to make a noise andwe have removed it. We will dismantle the machine and find out the cause. It charges up satisfactorily and I think the noise is due to the way in which the R-R end plate has been fitted to adopt it to suit the engine.

We have re-adjusted the tappets but they remain noisy due to the flats on the rollers. The running around here is quite different to Brittany and it will not be possible to do anywhere near the mileage per day we did there, owing to the very hilly and tortuous roads. The road surfaces so far as we have seen are fairly good. It would be interesting and instructive to have another car here to compare with this one especially as regards boiling. I do not think that 5-G-11 would boil so easily and my impression is that this car (6-G-11) did not run quite so hot with the previous cylinder head. Is it not possible for the casting to vary in some respect and allow of a very hot spot to generate in some heads and so cause steam pockets in spite of the fact that the inlet water to the cylinder may not be near to boiling point? In the next car to come here it would be interesting to fit a Cambridge thermo-meter on the bottom water pipe as well as the top. Also it would be useful to fit on the gradient indicator as the inclines are very deceptive when surrounded by mountains.

I have this morning been out on the road to Sisteron for 60 kilometers, and the car ran very well. The gradients on this road (which is, I believe, the one you took with 4-G-11 to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence) are long but not severe and can be done on top
