My dear CJ,.
X.2565. RE CHUNKING IN TRANSMISSION DOWN CHAMPS-ELYSEES.

Very sorry Mr. de Salamanca could not get the satisfaction out of his new chassis that he expected.

It is very difficult to get any engine to run down to no load and even retard the car on very slight down grades without an uneven reversal of the torque.

We think we have succeeded in this better than most makers in the past, and I do not see why the present chassis should fail to do reasonably well in this way. There is always a limit to what can be done.

I regret I did not see Mr. de Salamanca before he left, but I understand he had driven the new chassis before the body was fitted and had not complained of slow running.

The fault complained of can be due to premature ignition as (1) or misfiring from many causes:-

(1) There must be no firing at the wrong plugs by mutual electrostatic induction between the battery ignition wires (cure - separate the wire leading from the coil to the distributor away from the wires leading from the distributor to the plugs) I did this on my car some time ago but I am not sure that it is necessary.

(2) Miss-firing may be through bad fuel, either wholly or partly non-volatile, unless at high temperature, i.e. kerosine mixed with petrol.

(Contd.)
