Origin.
To prevent 3rd gear working out on overrun.

Experimental Test Report.
This shaft with altered position of splines has been fitted to 3 cars on which 3rd gear came out of mesh on the overrun effecting in each case a complete cure.

Has done several hundred miles on production chassis in Test Dept.
