OY11 April 5th, 1929. Mr. A.{Mr Adams} F.{Mr Friese} Sidgreaves, Rolls Royce Limited, London, England. Dear Mr. Sidgreaves: RE OIL FILTER - SECTION 5200 I notice from Experimental D.O. reports that work is in hand to develop a Rolls Royce oil-filter and assume that this does not refer to a strainer, but rather to an effective filtering system possibly on the lines of a disc filter. As you know we have on all Phantoms fitted a "Purolator", which is a bypass filter with cloth filtering elements. We also have tested for a long time the "Auto Klean" (Cuno) oil filter consisting of metal discs. This latter is an English invention. We have used it with some success on our engine test rigs. It safeguards the main bearings, timing gears, and extra cylinder lubrication from dirt. We have been considering substituting the "AutoKlean" for the "Purolator" because of the fact that the former is more effective and does not require periodical renewal. But before we make any such change we should like to have the ideas of the English design and experimental departments on this subject, and, if permissible, we should like to receive drawings of their latest ideas for developing an effective filter. Do you think it would be possible to have Mr. Bailey send us at least some notes on their findings at Derby, and sketches or arrangement prints of the developments? I attach two extra copies for circulation as you think fit. Yours very truly, ROLLS ROYCE OF AMERICA, INC. Maurice Olley | ||
