Bentley / Mr Barrington} x.607- RE VISIT TO WORKS OF THE CHLORIDE ELEC: STORAGE COMPANY We yesterday visited the Works of the above Company with a view to studying as far as possible the processes of pasting and forming, and were received and shown round the Works by Mr. McKinnon, Chief Engineer of the Chloride Company. It is not easy to give a detailed report of these processes, as the information concerning the respects in which the manufacture of their batteries differs from other peoples' is not readily given and is not easy to gather from inspection. For the Exide type of cells, the plates are pasted in the usual way, but we have no information to give as regards the particular composition of the paste peculiar to the Chloride Company with the exception of the fact that ammonia is used in some way in the paste for the positive plates, this being evident from the atmosphere of the room in which the pasting is done. Further, the details of the forming processes are not easily available. In the main, the Chloride Co. make two kinds of cells; the "Chloride" and the "Exide". There are also the "Iron-clad Exide" type of cells. The "Exide" cells all have pasted positive plates, the grids being made of antimonial lead, making use of as little lead as is possible consistent with the Contd.
