BALL BEARINGS - WRAITH GEARBOX.

With reference to RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer}3/FH.18.2.39, this subject has already been dealt with in Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Gry.{Shadwell Grylls}o/JH.16.2.39. Whilst we have every sympathy with the difficulty which is being experienced on production with "clonking", we feel that it would be unwise to venture the Schatz bearing until we have covered at least 15,000 miles on the road, particularly in view of the fact that we have just had to change over a great many pieces in the gearbox owing to inadequate experimental testing.

In order to get the mileage on this bearing in a reasonable time it may be necessary to run the official 15,000 miles test on the Continent, but as there are a number of other items which want endurance mileage it may be possible to arrange this.

We believe we are correct in saying that "clonking" has not so far appeared as a trouble in customers' hands.
