Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}2/JH.31.8.36. Phantom III Exhaust System. With regard to the 30 M.P.H. exhaust boom on Phantom III cars complained of by LA{L. A. Archer}, we have now been able to effect a 50% improvement by the following methods, (a) Increase length of front expansion box from 19" to 27". (b) Reduce tail pipe dia. from 2.00" to 1.750". (c) The tail pipe must be mounted on rubber by means of a silentbloc scheme similar to the one designed for Wraith. These items avoid the necessity of altering the main silencer design, and the reduced tail pipe dia. only loses 2 B.H.P. at the peak. We appreciate that the present exhaust system is both heavy and costly, and we are about to tackle the job of making a lighter and more simple system.
