BENTLEY re PISTONS & REBORES. ==================== The Works are perturbed over the question of running in of pistons after a rebore. The scoring and seizing of pistons, even after a lengthy mileage has been run, can be traced to faulty running in in the first instance. The scuffing of aluminium pistons is very liable without precautions are taken. The Works go to the extent of filtering the oil in the Delaval and run with light loads for two hours. A tin plated piston is being produced to overcome this trouble, which will be available very shortly. Until the plated piston is available, BY's instructions are that on every rebore or where new pistons are fitted, the engine must be run on pure castor oil lightly for two hours before proceeding on the road, precautions being taken that the odour of the castor oil does not get into the body. His suggestions are that a test engine should be used, the cylinder and pistons being the units having attention. In the event of the tin plated pistons coming through quickly, I should not consider this expense necessary. Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/GWH.{George W. Hancock - Head Chateauroux} | ||
