BENTLEY 60 CLUTCH CASING DISTORTION TEST. GB.4333.

In order to produce the deflection of the clutch casing suspected on the engine, the A/Dc casing was attached (inverted) to a rigid steel plate, the magnesium gear box casing being attached, and a load of 500 lb. suspended from the engine support to represent the weight of the engine.

The deflection was measured by indicator at the points shown in the attached sketch BL.2348, firstly as the casing was produced, and then with 5 webs welded on - see BL.2349 - to increase the stiffness. The actual deflections recorded are given in BL.2348 and there are three points to note:-

(a.{Mr Adams}) That the maximum deflection "C" was apparently reduced when the longitudnal webs "W" were removed.

(b.) That the greatest stiffening effect was due to the cross Web "X".

(c.) That the deflection "C" finally with all webs removed w again was .002" less than the original reading.

A new casing was obtained and the deflection at "C"(without webs) was found to be the same as the original figure of .007".

The welding heat had evidently affected the casing.

It was observed on removing the webs that the welding had only penetrated for approximately 30% of the width of the webbing, consequently the maximum effect was not produced.
