J.N. Longley, Esq.,
Chief Chemist,
Messrs. Ferodo Ltd.,
Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Your Ref: JNL/IS.

Dear Mr. Longley,

Many thanks for measuring the coefficient of expansion of the rings I left with you last week. These are rather lower than we had hoped.

Perhaps you will return these rings to me, as I want to have photomicrographs taken of one of them. I will be sending you the complete drums for testing early next year, provided that they are satisfactory on the road.

I believe you are sending me 200 rivets sometime this week. As we use nearly this number on a single car, and as we would like to try rivets of a different shape, I should be much obliged if you could let me know the name and address of your brass supplier, and his specification number for this particular material, so that we can give it a thorough trial. I have discovered that our present material is a 60-40 brass with 2.1% lead, and we have had another case of rivet failure.

I have asked Mr. Hall to send you direct the photomicrographs of millenite, for which you asked. I hope they will be of value to you.

Kind regards,

Yours very truly,

FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED.
