X6089 #S To Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} from Sg.{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD} Copy to R.{Sir Henry Royce} EPC. W PH. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} re Dynamo Output - Two Charge Scheme. Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}8/E21.1.31 Referring to EPC1/ADS.1.31, E1/M10.1.31 and various other memos., the output of the dynamo as re-arranged on 58-GN now seems very good under all conditions. I understood that the two charge scheme as originally fitted up on 58-GN was to commence on H.2 Series, both England and America, and I should be glad to know whether it is now proposed to modify these dynamos on the lines of the modifications embodied in 58-GN. If so, I assume that it is a fairly simple alteration but should be glad of information on this point. With regard to the substitution of 48 watt headlamp bulbs instead of 60, I asked PH to take the car out specially with a view to testing the illuminating power of these less watt lamp bulbs. He informs me that the tests made were not altogether satisfactory and that he does not consider that they give sufficient light for a man who wanted to drive at high speed on a dark night. We, however, see no objection to the 48 bulb being standardised when the modified dynamos begin to come through so long as it is clearly understood that, once a car is delivered, we cannot control the matter. There will probably be certain instances where owners will fit the more powerful bulbs, but the only disadvantage, so far as we can see, is that the rate of discharge under certain conditions will then be a little more than with the 48.
