Sidgreaves - MD} WOR.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} GEARBOX X.4553 C. to E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} RHC.{R. H. Coverley - Production Engineer} BENSPORT & PEREGRINE. X.4027 We send herewith N. sch. 3490 which shews most of the Bensport gearbox. The remaining information will be sent in a few days. The shaft centres have been increased from 2.8" on existing Peregrine to 3". As Bensport and Peregrine are to have identical gearboxes excepting control, this information also applies to Peregrine. We shall be sending the necessary modifications to the Peregrine side change mechanism to suit this box very shortly. The gear ratios are: 3rd .75 2nd .49 1st .31 R .31 Peregrine will not need to have so large a flange as Bensport, but we are assuming for the moment that for reasons of manufacture the flanges will be identical. We would call attention to the following points on N. scheme 3490 :- (1) All of the ball and roller bearings are standard except that on the 1st motion shaft. As shewn it measures 35 X 77 X 19 which gives the same section as for the size smaller 30 X 72 X 19 medium, and consequently mot less load than for the latter i.e. 760 lbs at 2000. The nearest standard size is 1 3/8" X 3" X 11/16" light (34.9 X 76.3 X 17.5) which is only rated at 530 lbs. at 2000. This is too low. The 30 mm. dia. of the standard 35 bore bearing leaves insufficient metal between the bearings. We do not mind what section is used approx-imating to what we shew so long as the makers will give a rating not less than 760 lbs at 2000, for example 1 3/8" X 3" X 3/4" might be preferred. (2) The inner race of the roller bearing on the 3rd motion shaft is located with slight clearance by the sleeve which is a press fit of sufficient tightness to prevent rotation. There is no pin in the sleeve and the nut is of such hand that it tightens should the sleeve rotate. | ||
