A.T. SPEEDOMETER CO.LD. 183, THE VALE, ACTON LONDON. W.3. Your Ref. ROY {Sir Henry Royce} /JT20/HP. Our Ref. HOB/W. 2nd January 1929. Messrs. Rolls-Royce Limited., Nightingale Road, DERBY. Dear Sirs, re - R.7338 Speedometer No. B563. We have now received the instrument referred to in your letter of the 31st December and Mr H.O.Booth has carefully rechecked the instrument without taking it down and we find no slip whatever, the needle being quite firm on the spindle. A possible explanation of the slip you found may be that when received here the instrument had one of the cable screws (which connect the cable to the head) left in the hole and possibly when you tested it on the bench this was not noticed, and, therefore, the instrument was not able to be connected to the correct position for test. In any case we find absolutely nothing whatever wrong with the instrument now and await your instructions as to whether we should take it down for further examination. We have not cared to do this, so that it might be available for your further inspection in its present state. The question of the rubber washer is one which we still think simply a coincidence, and difficult to explain but undoubtedly when the instrument was re-assembled, further condensation may have appeared through the same fact of the thick oil still being in the base of the instrument. With regard to the last paragraph of your favour in respect to the charge on our invoice No.8599 dated 19th ulto. We are pleased to inform you that it was found that the cost of carrying out same were less than the sum of 18/6d quoted in ours of the 13th ulto. and we were, therefore, able to give you the benefit of this saving.
