25/30. SLOW RUNNING.

In order to effect an improvement in idling, the following instructions to be issued to the various Depots.

(1) Tappets to be set all round at .008" clearance with hot engine.

(2) Std. production K.L.G. FLB.30.X. spark plugs with gaps set at .025"

(3) Ignition governor to be dismantled and new spring fitted.

The modified spring is identical to E.52103 but in 18.SWG. (.048) dia. wire. We are asking D.O. to detal and give official number. A dozen such springs have been handed over to Cricklewood and instructed as to how to carry out the modification.

When dismantled and thoroughly cleaned, the actuating spindle should be perfectly free or made so.

Following assembly with the new spring, the ends of the spring to be held clear of the governor weights and again check for being perfectly free. This is mentioned as the governor arms when tightened up sometimes create thrust on each other or the washer which render the governor tight in operation.

The spring is then set to just return the weights without any more initial tension than is necessary.

The control lever is modified in accordance with LeC.5697 in order to reduce the hand control range. Until the new pull rod is available the existing rod will do the job, that is saw off the eye at one end, thread and screw on J.B.A. ball end.

The eye pin on the short lever at the top of the control standard is knocked out and J.B.A. ball pin fitted.

To complete the job the position of the lever at the base is altered relative to the spindle and a new slot for the pinch bolt made. The setting for the governor when modified is T.D.C. full advance on the hand control.

Governors so modified to be stamped S. on external of governor case where it can be seen. We are asking for the above to be on all production 30.HP. from the time the deturbulated heads are. The setting on these is by reason of the altered head 5° B.T.D.C.
