To Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. BJ. c. to PN.{Mr Northey} CWB. c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} +8992 7-EX - STEERING. R4/M24.7.25. X.8430 X.8770 +8992 With reference to my 7-EX car which I am to use to prove the general advantages of our recent improvements, I am very anxious that this car shall have the steering which I am pressing for early adoption. (1) It consists of the lower speed steering, in the neighbourhood of 50%, increasing the 1 1/4 turns of the steering wheel to 2 1/4 turns. I have been preaching this for a long time but nothing has happened. (2) We have now provided you with a larger dia. of worm, so that its efficiency and reversibility will be less. (3) The third item is the friction damped spring controlled pendulum lever. These 3 items and sufficient shock damping to the front of the caris going to make a remarkable improvement, in which we ought to be in advanace of anything existing. If we do not do it promptly, and get the advantage of it, but instead rest to be adversely criticised by comparisons with others, it will be our own fault. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
