COPY OF PROVISIONAL PATENT. TITLE. Improvement in design of Combustion Chamber and arrangement of Valves in Internal Combustion Engines. Bertram Arthur Peat, 44 Macleay Street, Sydney, Australasian Representative of Rolls-Royce Ltd., England. Improvement in design of Combustion Chamber and arrangement of Valves in Internal Combustion Engines. This invention relates to the arranging of an intermediate valve between the valves proper and the combustion chamber in internal Combustion Engines with the object of separating the compressed mixture of petrol vapor and air from the heated exhaust valve head for a period covering the ignition moment of same, thereby reducing to a minimum, liability to detonation and permitting the use of higher compression ratios - fuels having lower self-ignition temperature and other advantages as set out later. Taking an engine of conventional design to illustrate this, - an engine having two valves per cylinder only, operating in a side pocket, is arranged to have the passage from same to combustion chamber proper cut off and separated by a third valve. This intermediate valve being arranged to open at approximately the same time as the exhaust valve proper and to close at approximately the same time as the inlet valve proper. In the case of cylinders having valves situated overhead or elsewhere, these valves may be paired or grouped in pockets, side by side, inclined or opposed, or may be duplicated or multiplied as may seem necessary or desirable.
