X.4260 To HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} from DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} DA{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}/EV{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}5/M18.11.24. Further to our note of yesterday re. GF.68 underframe, we have made suggestions for determining whether the forward projecting ends of the underframe vibrate, or whether the frame at the front translates bodily. We now wonder also whether the frame bends sideways in a horizontal plane, and suggest that to ascertain whether this is so, we could temporarily cross brace one of the bays with either flat sheet strip, or round rod, or wire. Apparently the bay most suitable is that lying between the 2nd. and 3rd. cross members counting backwards from the dash. This movement might account for that peculiar shudder which is sometimes experienced along its longitudinal axis. As we pointed out in our note yesterday these experiments are of considerable interest to us as the results will enable us to fix up the design for the EAC.2. frame, on which we are now engaged.
