R.R. Bearing Metal.

We have 6 engines running in the Experimental Dept. with this material. We have completed over 50 hours full throttle running on a Bentley with a set of these bearings. The main trouble is getting the bearing alloy to adhere to the steel shell. If the adhesion is good the bearing metal has shown itself to be far better than white metal. Owing to the adhesion difficulty, considerable trouble has been experienced in getting good bearings and the percentage of scrap has been high. Investigation is continuing and at the same time we are trying running the material without a steel backing.

SpectreCodename for Phantom III.

Vapour Lock:

15,000 miles car now running with filter outside frame. B-56-BN{W.O. Bentley / Mr Barrington} running with filter fitted on the back cross member. Other schemes under consideration.

Slow Running:

Improved by venting the float chamber covers to the atmosphere. Experiments with Stromberg carburetters proceeding.

Piston Knocks.

Die-cast SpectreCodename for Phantom III pistons required to continue experiments. Development work continuing on the fully split type of pistons.

Carburetter Flooding.

The power of the float is being increased on the 4 carburetter scheme. The single Stromberg carburetter scheme is going ahead, but it is unlikely to be ready for 12 months.
