To Mx.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} from Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm.{William Robotham - Chief Engineer} c. to BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} X8425 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}2/LS29.1.27. With reference to Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn{Mr Robinson}1/T22.1.27. The load of 1 1/8 +- 1/2 lb. which we gave as that which should be obtained to rotate the steering wheel without the spring loaded cross steering tube in the system, was meant to apply to cars when they come off the final road test. We do not think that an attempt should be made to get the steerings down to this figure before they have been run on the road, as otherwise they will be rather too free when passed off the final test.
