The condition of a dismantled engine after a 12,000 miles test.

ENGINE.

Cylinders.

The condition of the cylinder bores are good. There has been ample lubrication. There is no sign of any water leaks from the cylinder joints.

Crankcase.

No mechanical weakness has been observed.

Crank.

The crank journals are in a very good condition. The amount of carbon sludge collected in the journals is less than usual, the total weight being 2 1/4 ozs. + 3 1/4 grams. = .1483 lbs.

Bearings.

The con rod bearings and main bearings are in a poor condition, the metal having flowed and cracked. The high oil temperatures reached frequently 125°C. is a probable cause of the condition. The result can be seen by the photograph attached.

Pistons.

The pistons show very even bedding. There is no sign of any tightness or scorings. The rings were free. There is a considerable amount of soft carbon on the heads. The absence of hard carbon denotes that the piston heads have not been overheated or locally heated. Although there has been no sign of overoiling during running the condition of the pistons tend to prove that excessive oil is passing the pistons.

Cylinder Head & Valves.

There is a considerable amount of soft carbon deposit in all the explosion chambers. All water ways were free, between the head and cylinder block. The valves do not show any undue wear on the stems or heads the inlet valves were covered with carbon on the under side. The bearing surfaces show little sign of wear. The aluminium bearings for the camshaft have stood up very well.
