X4333 [Stamp: MAY 20 1922] Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} BYG/H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} 19. 5. 22. E.P.C. Dept. X 4333 GOSHAWK II, DYNAMO. RE CONTROL OF LEADS FROM BRUSH GEAR. Lec. 1572. The proposal to produce tabs or fingers on the main brush plates carrying the brushes, with the object of locating the cables, introduces a weakness which we have been trying to eliminate. Due to the rubbing away of the carbon brush, powder is deposited pretty liberally on all the brush gear and when the insulation followed the contour of the brush bracket, the dust collected so thickly as to cause a "short" between the brush and the case. To overcome this we made the insulation to overlap the brush bracket by .125". The new design referred to above cuts out the value we obtained by this proposal. It appears to us essential that the lead from the brush bracket to where it passes through the end frame bracket, should be kept in position in such a manner as to enable us to give the overlap of insulation referred to above, as we have actually had trouble from the fault referred to. Obviously, a small clip could be made which would be square under the two cheese head screws shown, which would have a tab, or even two, preferably, to locate the lead in order to keep same clear of brush, and enable the brush to be lifted up.
