X235 HS {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} To. BY. {R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} [struck through] from BJ. Copy to W.r. Copy to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} Hydraulic Dampers on 20 HP. Whilst realising that these were necessary to prevent high speed wobbles on the Phantom, as it was such an expensive addition to the 20 HP before signing the Standardisation Sheet, I wished to understand clearly the actual reasons it was essential on that chassis. I therefore wrote to Hs. {Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} asking for a clear explanation which enabled me to understand and sign the sheet. In discussing this on Tuesday evening, I think you mentioned that you had often stated that these absorbers were necessary to make the 20 HP safe when medium pressure tyres were adopted. We cannot at the moment trace your memos about this, and I shall be obliged if you will kindly send me copies to attach to the other correspondence concerning the standardisation sheet, so that the reasons for adoption are all complete.
