COPY. BENTLEY MOTORS (1931) LIMITED. Memo. from MR. WITCHELL. To Mr. A.{Mr Adams} F.{Mr Friese} SIDGREAVES. RSW/WL. 14th January, 1932. With reference to your enquiry as to the cost of completing a 4-litre engine for experimental work, there is a complete engine which has been lying on the test bed for more than six months. It is, as far as I know, standard in all respects, but I do not know the condition of the internal parts. The original type camshaft BM.8743 is fitted to the engine, with valve springs BM.7715 and 7716. I suggest that the engine should be transported on the stand to which it is fixed, as this stand would probably be useful for the tests which are to be made. The engine could be handed over in its present state at a day's notice, but if it is to be examined and checked over, ten days should be allowed. The cost of such examination, in wages without overheads, should not exceed £10. As you know, there is a modified form of camshaft, which is known as BM.9290, and this type has been fitted to those chasses which have been sold to Jack Barclay Ltd., and Jack Olding and Co. So far, we have no valve springs for use with this latter camshaft which give satisfactory results. As far as I can tell at present there will be two of these BM.9290 camshafts spare, and one could be fitted if it is required. I await your instructions before moving in this matter. (Sgd.) R.S.
