was brought out for 23-EX, but the people here cannot weld stainless steel which I found out to my cost, stainless steel wire being necessary, therefore it was a case of doing what we could.

Upon arriving here, I have read Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}3/MJ.9/7/30 letter. In the first place, I should like to state plainly that there is always the case of how is a car driven. A fairly high average speed can be maintained with a three-quarter throttle opening, a slightly higher average speed with full throttle all the time, but the difference in water temperature is very marked. In the first case the heat units the engine is developing is considerably less than when the car is being driven as in the second case, therefore as the car is driven mostly by four different drivers i took the precaution to state in all my Daily Reports maximum water temperature and average water temperature; maximum air temperature and average air temperature. These are taken every 50 miles, to cover up the difference in which the car is driven. In my Daily Report of the 5/7/30 I gave the water temperatures at various speeds to show definitely that with a high air temperature the cooling efficiency was inadequate when the engine was giving off its maximum heat units. It is impossible to make the cooling system appear worse than what it is under the conditions as run on that date. I am perfectly aware that in the event of the left-hand chassis going to America and there is trouble with the water boiling with the high air temperatures they get over there, the Administration will turn round and say:-
"Why was this not found out during the 10.000 miles test?"
