Before the car left, we had trouble with the wheels creaking badly. We have since heard from By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} that they have to be continually tightening the wheels in order to overcome the creaking. The Rudge-Whitworth representative has been over to see us with reference to this matter. As the R.{Sir Henry Royce}-W. wire wheels fitted to 7-Gos.II are the only set we have running at present, they are arranging for an expert to go to France and to examine the wheels and explain how the creaking can be overcome. After the interview with their expert, one would imagine that creaking is likely to be a common fault with the R.{Sir Henry Royce}-W. wheel. They impress upon one so much as regards the necessity of tightening up the wheel with a metal hammer and recommend that the wheel should be jacked up when this is done. The attention they recommend is much more than is necessary with the Dunlop. The creaking appears to come from the cone to the lock nut which is a fine angle. From the results so far, we do not consider R.{Sir Henry Royce}-W. wheels are as satisfactory as the Dunlop. The creaking of the R.{Sir Henry Royce}-W. wheels is equally objectionable as the squeaking of the thick leaf springs from which we have received a large number of complaints and put to a very great expense.
